Stargate Universe Season Three

Stargate fans! I know Stargate Universe was a bit different. But if you enjoyed it at all, and are interested in finding out what happens after the end of season two, this written work was created to "complete" SGU. This work was written by Laurence Moroney.

 Enjoy!

SG-1 Completed

Stargate has become one of my favorite series since I first heard of it. It took me a couple of years to put the whole outfit together. A lot of that time was spent researching the costumes from the show and what other people had done in order to get the finished outfit that I wanted. The rest of the time was spent putting it together- many hours of sewing stitch by stitch, getting the colors just right, etc.

Now that it's finished, I wear it with some pride. Blood, sweat and tears truly went into this outfit. As I stroll through wherever it is I'm strolling, it's cool to see people smile and shout "Stargate!" at me, not because I'm searching for attention, but because I enjoy encountering other fans of the show. The reason I made this outfit in the first place was because I loved the show and I wanted to provide others with some help on making their own. People smile and take pictures because they have that same appreciation for the series. It's not really even me- when they see the outfit, they're thinking of when the Tau'ri first encountered alien life, fought the Replicators, defended Earth countless times against the Goa'uld, discovered new technology and allies that lived in other worlds, and every time SG-1 stepped through the gate. They went through the same journey that SG-1 did and so did I.

Communication Stone

"There were these stones, and if you place them in one of several recesses around the outside of the device, it activates it, and allows you to connect with someone far, far away—across the galaxy, inter-galactically even..."

- Rodney McKay

How useful would that be? Eh?
Joe found it useful for telling stories and writing. O'Neill...he just had random flashes of another person's life and decided that it was normal...

"My name is Joe Spencer, and you ruined my life!"

- Joe

We next see the stones in use when Daniel and Vala take a mental trip to Ver Eger in the Alteran home galaxy.

Which ended up not going so well...

And let's not forget this episode:

We also see the stones in use in SGU:
I got mine from ebay.com just like this one for about the same price:

I'm sure there are a few other places to find them. Just start looking before they all go away!

Now all I need is the long-range communication device...

SG-1 The Eye of Ra

Giza, 1928. Catherine Langford keeps the necklace she found as a child during her father's archaeological dig.

This is one of those pieces that you can add to your off-world outfit if you want that extra touch of detail. (Or if you're a giant nerd and have to have the necklace because you can)

The necklace eventually reaches the hands of Daniel Jackson.
I got mine as a gift so I don't know the exact details. But it was from ebay.com for around $150. It's solid metal but not heavy, and has metal ringlets around the entire length. There are also turquoise and dark brown beads. Not sure what the cord is, maybe leather?

They are somewhat rare at this point but you might be able to find one somewhere. Here's a few sites that might help:
stargateprops.com
stitchsloft.com has a ton of cool props/pieces for your outfit but may be too expensive- their pendant is going for $225
Some people are making their own! http://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=164621

I wish I could be of more help in this matter!

We also see the Eye of Ra with, well...Ra.

SG-1 VEST Modifications

As stated in a previous post, if you are a little picky like me, you can modify your vest to look like the ones used on the show. http://www.scifihero.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=6310 This is TeeKay's walk-through that I followed to modify my vest and she explains the steps in detail. Very well done. The only thing I did differently was buy the SGA Webtex Assault vest: http://www.ironfoot.co.uk/shop/index.php?id_product=8&controller=product (now on sale!) And that is so I can use the same single back piece for both SG-1 and SGA vests.

I was going to do a walk-through on the steps to modifying but TeeKay did it so well I don't have much to add. So here are a few of my pictures during the process to (hopefully) help!

~Atlantis vest on the left, SG-1 on the right after straps were removed from the sides and center~

~Side by side comparison of where the front and back will attach, before grommets are inserted~

~Grommets (both pieces) are spray painted black before inserting, size #00 3/16"
You also need the grommet setter also from Tandy. Make sure to get the same size as the grommets!
P.S. Tandy Leather Factory is awesome.

~After grommets~

~Black velcro fro the backs of the new straps that go over the shoulder to the back piece, got this at Michael's~

~Black canvas bag for the straps themselves (because it was the closest material similar to the straps I could find) at Michael's~

~Lots of sewing- velcro to the back, straps with clips to the front (after being sewn on, the clip stops just before the velcro begins)~

~Sewing the ends together~

~Don't throw them away, use them for the strap!~

~Mission accomplished!~

This was one of the earlier episodes before they changed the buckles on the shoulder straps or added the Air Force patch.

SG-1 Dog Tags

Dog tags are another great detail to have for your outfit! They add that official military look to complete your uniform.

I don't know where they got the dog tags they used for the show, but I got mine here: usamilitarymedals.com

Got to 'Military Dog Tags', then choose your branch (Navy, Army, United States Marine Corps, or Air Force). I chose Air Force because Samantha Carter is in the Air Force. Then you can pick the finish of the dog tags, the type of chain, and the type of silencer you want.

To get as close to the show and actual military, I picked 'Dull Finish Dog Tags', 'Stainless Steel Dog Tag Chain' and 'Black Rubber Silencers Milspec'.

You get two tags, one large chain and one small chain, and two silencers with your order. Not bad!

You also have the option to customize your dog tags. Here is a picture of 'Samantha Carter's' prop tags from the show:

You can use the numbers on these as your 'ID' or you can make up your own. Don't put your real birth date or your soc. sec...Just don't. Use part of the serial code on a gatorade bottle or something.

And once you have them, don't lose them! Or let them get sucked into a black hole!

Here are mine!

If you take good care of them, they'll last for a reeeaaally long time!

Proof!

SG-1 Velcro

So, you have your flight jacket and you have your patches. It's time to get the velcro that brings them together!

No, the patches are not sewn on (although you can put them on that way, you just won't be able to get them off again).

There are five pieces (seven with the Air Force patch) of velcro that you need, and all of them go on the flight jacket. One is the rectangular piece that goes on the front of the flight jacket centered about 1" just above the left pocket.

The next ones you'll need are circular, each size matching the patch it holds onto. This is the best picture I could find. It shows the circular patch on her left shoulder. (Keep in mind that Claudia Black's wardrobe was slightly different from the rest of the team.)

I got all of my velcro from here: nametags4u.com It's also called Williams & Williams and they provide excellent quality velcro with colors that match!

Here is a picture of mine:

I got velcro for my flight jacket (7) and my BDU shirt (4). You'll need a HOOK and LOOP for each patch, except for the rectangular one (unless you do want to put a name patch on it). The HOOK must be sewn onto the BACK of the PATCH. The LOOP must be sewn onto the MATERIAL.

Hook = prickly.
Loop = fuzzy.

You want to make sure you get the right sizes, too. 4" hook and loop for the SG-1 Team Patch for the right shoulder. 3.5" hook and loop for the Earth Patch for the left shoulder. 3" for the Air Force Patch for the right shoulder below the Team Patch (if you so choose).

For the BDU shirt, you'll only need the 4" SG-1 Team and the 3.5"Earth hooks and loops. They don't use the Air Force Patch on the BDU's.

When sewing on the fuzzy loop to the material, be sure to use the same color thread, be it OD green, black or tan.

Also, be aware of the color of thread you use for sewing the prickly hook to the back of the patches. I used black for all of them and sewed around the colors. The sewing itself can be tricky as you are dealing with velcro but using pins and taking it slow will get it done looking nice and neat!

On the website, go to the left menu where it says 'VELCRO or Hook and Loop'. Next go to 'Die Cut Hook and Loop in Multiple Colors' and you will have options for the size. When you click on each one, it will give you specifics on ordering. Select color and whether you want hook or loop. You must order each side separately.
Then for the rectangle, under 'VELCRO or Hook and Loop', next go to '2"x4" in Multiple Colors'.

As far as placement on the flight jacket, I mentioned above that the rectangle should be centered above the left pocket about 1" above, equi-distant from each side of the pocket, and sewn on with a cross stitch (giving the stitching an 'X' appearance).

The Earth patch should be 1" from the main sleeve seam. There should be equal distance from the top and bottom of the patch to the top of the sleeve seam and the top of the pocket seam.

That may be a bit confusing...
Visual aid!

Basically, you want the patch to sit above the pocket on the left arm so that it's about the same distance from all the seams. The reason you want it to not be centered above the pocket is because
a. that's how it is in the show (SEE 1st PIC)
b. when you put the jacket on, the patch will be showing straight out to the left

Once you've got the velcro right where you want it, pin it down and get sewing!
I was very picky and chose not to sew all the way through the thinsulate lining, just through the one layer, but it's up to you.

For the SG-1 Team Patch, you'll want to sew it about 1.5" from the TOP horizontal sleeve seam, and so that the middle of the patch lines up with the vertical shoulder seam. And about 1.5" -2" from the vertical sleeve seam to its left.

The USAF patch should be placed about 1/2" below the SG-1 Team Patch and so that the middle lines up with the other one.

I hope this helps! Happy Sewing!
